Press Release

Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present Bridget Riley, an exhibition of paintings, prints, and works on paper by British artist Bridget Riley. The show will be on view September 27 through November 1, 2024. The gallery will host a reception on Friday, September 27 from 4:00 to 7:00pm.

Spanning over forty years of work, Bridget Riley charts the career of one of the United Kingdom’s most influential artists at the height of her talents. Perhaps the most famous figure of the midcentury movement Op Art, the central focus of Riley’s has been illusion—what we see versus what is really there. In Riley’s Fragment series, painstakingly calculated geometries scrunch, slam, twist, and jar along each other, with the color black acting as a structural support for each composition. The result is paradoxically harmonious and disorientating, generating motion in a stationary form. Other works, such as Ra (Inverted) and Brouillard, precisely arrange colored lines to create images that seem to quiver and pulse. In excavating kinetics and dimensionality where they do not exist, this collection of artworks forces spectators to reckon with visual language and the limits of sensory perception, positioning Riley as a pioneer, if not the pillar, of Op Art.
