Richard Diebenkorn | Art & Exhibits Datebook Pick

The work of famed Bay Area artist Richard Diebenkorn returned to Berggruen Gallery for a ninth solo show this month, titled Richard Diebenkorn: Paintings and Works on Paper, 1948-1992.

Diebenkorn’s early work in the 1950s and ’60s was associated with abstract expressionism and the Bay Area Figurative Movement. By the late ’60s, he was working in a new abstract style that became the basis for his “Ocean Park” paintings, which brought him international recognition. The new show at Berggruen spans the range of the artist’s career, styles and movements including representational figurative, still life, works on paper and landscape renderings, as well as a selection works from his Healdsburg period of the ’80s and early ’90s.

The exhibit features more than 50 works. The gallery says an exhibition of this breadth and scale is possible because of the long relationship between Diebenkorn and Gretchen and John Berggruen. The gallery first showed Diebenkorn’s work in 1975, just a few years after opening in downtown San Francisco. The show is a do-not-miss event for serious Diebenkorn devotees.
