Press Release

John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present a landmark exhibition Looking Back: 45 Years, celebrating 45 years the gallery has been in business and its commitment to the artistic and contemporary cultural environment of San Francisco and beyond. This exhibition will occupy both floors of the gallery and will be accompanied by an illustrated catalog.  It will be on view from October 8 – December 19, 2015.

By bringing together historical works the gallery has exhibited and placed in private and public collections alike since opening its doors in 1970, this show presents an important selection of significant examples from the 20th and 21st Century movements in modernism, ranging from Abstract Expressionism, Pop, and Bay Area Figurative and is represented by paintings, drawings and sculpture. The exhibition features major examples by artists such as: Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, Willem de Kooning, Mark di Suvero, Richard Diebenkorn, Arthur Dove, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Philip Guston, Frida Kahlo, Ellsworth Kelly, Franz Kline, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Georgia O’Keeffe, Claes Oldenburg, Nathan Oliveira, David Park, Diego Rivera, Mark Rothko, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, Clyfford Still, Mark Tansey, and Wayne Thiebaud.

This show not only tells a story of John Berggruen Gallery's extensive exhibition and acquisition history, but also explores how dynamic the collecting passion and commitment to the development of the arts and institutions of San Francisco and beyond has been.

The exhibition includes works on loan from private collections and museums, many of which have rarely been shown to the public.

We would like to extend our warmest gratitude to the individuals and institutions who have allowed us the opportunity to bring these works together in commemoration of the gallery’s history and to share them with the public.
