John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Kris Cox. This exhibition opens Wednesday, May 7th, and will run through Saturday, June 7th.
The upcoming exhibition features Kris Cox's Concentric Episode Series and Curtain Series, in which he continues to explore minimalist abstraction. The Concentric Episode Series works are symbolic abstractions of time and memory, created by a process of applying multiple layers of pigmented putties on wood panels with grids that have been chased into their surfaces. Those grids, which appear irregularly throughout the layers of putty, are a metaphor for memory, while the concentric, multichromatic rings are symbolic of time. His Curtain Series, which also consists of multiple layers of pigmented wood putties, are more organic and gestural than the Concentric Episode Series. Read as translucent curtains or membranes, works from the Curtain Series suggest both a literal and metaphoric barrier between the painting and the viewer.
Kris Cox, a San Francisco resident, earned his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island in 1977. He received grants from the E.D. Foundation in New York and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is included many private and public collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Oakland Art Museum.
