Kiki Smith

John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by New York artist Kiki Smith. The exhibition opens Thursday, September 14 and will run through Saturday October 28, 2000.

Born in Germany, Kiki Smith was raised in New York in an artistic household of her renowned artist father Toni Smith. The underlying essence of her work is visceral visuality whereby she has not only defined body-conscious art, she has taken it to the next level with her ability to feel and develop figures from inside out. Exploring the difficult relationship of the body and its mortality, Smith has effectively used scale in her installation to bring audience awareness to human vulnerability. The media she uses varies from bronze to glass to paper.  Hailed as a “Neo-symbolist master”, her work is however, more about spiritual discovery than political dogma.

Kiki Smith has held solo exhibitions in London, New York, Washington, Geneva, Montreal, Munich, Berkeley, Vienna, Dublin, Bonn and others. Earlier this year she received the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture. Her work is represented in many of the world’s greatest public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Tate Gallery in London, The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
