Christopher Brown

Recent Paintings

April 15 – May 29, 2004

This exhibition features Christopher Brown's most recent paintings. Having worked with abstract subject matter for a number of years, Brown has returned to representation but has not abandoned abstraction altogether. In fact, many elements of abstraction still exist in these works such as the blurred paint and the unexpected compositions. This new body of work—which includes figures, horses, trains, logs, and cats—represents a synthesis of representation and abstraction, of the observed and the invented.

Born in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Christopher Brown received his B.F.A at the University of Illinois and his M.F.A at the University of California, Davis. His work has been exhibited by a number of galleries across the country, as well as by museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the San Jose Museum of Art. Brown has held various teaching positions at the California College of Arts in San Francisco, University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Virginia, Charlottsville. Currently, Brown is living and working in the San Francisco area.
