Press Release

Jane Hammond
Open Book
September 4 – October 18, 2003

John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by Jane Hammond. The exhibition, entitled Open Book, will open on Thursday, September 4th, and will run through Saturday, October 18th.

New York-based artist Jane Hammond continues to create works that reflect her fascination with books, the written word, and images of everyday life. The show will feature large paintings that resemble open 3-ring notebooks as well as several works on paper.

Concomitant with the show at John Berggruen Gallery, Jane will exhibit her recent artist book at the Book Arts and Special Collections Center in the San Francisco Public Library. That show, entitled Be Zany, Poised Harpist / Be Blue, Little Sparrows, opens on Tuesday, September 9th, with a lecture by the artist from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, and runs until Sunday, October 19th.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Jane Hammond received her BA from Arizona State University in 1974 and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977. Her work is included in many private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, September 4th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
