Christopher Brown: New Paintings
Christopher Brown
May 30, 2002Description
Christopher Brown, an artist who lives in Berkeley and whose work has long been a favorite nationally as well as in the Bay Area, sets forth his most recent body of work. The paintings, most of which measure 45" x 30", are acrylic and mixed media on paper mounted on board.
Brown's work has always most notably been about the relationship between representation and abstraction, but these paintings mark a milestone in Christopher Brown's evolution as an artist. While he has taken a turn further towards abstraction, these paintings still have a distinct atmospheric quality recognizable in all his work. There is still a representational quality to them, but it is clear that he discovered a liberation from the confines of the figurative space.
Drawing from a diverse palette, Mr. Brown fills his paintings with emphatic strokes of bright color. Relating to the landscape around him, Brown depicts scenes from his daily life, interpreting them with a new flare and adding to them dimensions not apparent in his earlier work. This was Mr. Brown's first show at The John Berggruen Gallery.
