Press Release

Tom McKinley

April 3 – May 3, 2008

John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Bay Area artist, Tom McKinley. This exhibition opens April 3rd and continues through May 3, 2008. John Berggruen Gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, April 3rd between 5:30 and 7:30pm.

Tom McKinley's latest exhibition is comprised of 18 new paintings, all meticulously composed in the photorealist style and with the illusive quality that has become synonymous with McKinley's name. In his most recent body of work, McKinley invites his viewers into a series of eerie yet alluring architectural landscapes and interiors. Although predominantly devoid of people, his canvases are often occupied by objects of material culture that suggest human interaction – books, beds, and paintings that are juxtaposed with the clean, spare interiors to hint at lived-in spaces. The results are highly evocative and finely rendered canvases that skillfully draw viewers into a world that is both representational and quietly surreal.

Tom McKinley was born in Bay City, Michigan, and was educated in both Europe at the Brighton Polytechnic, Ravensbourne College of Art, London, and the Falmouth School of Art and in the United States at Goddard College in Vermont. This is his fifth solo exhibition at John Berggruen Gallery. McKinley currently lives and works in the San Francisco area.
