Squeak Carnwath

Paper Trail

October 22 – November 22, 2003

John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Squeak Carnwath. This exhibition opens Wednesday, October 22nd, and will run through Saturday, November 22nd.

In the upcoming exhibition Paper Trail, Carnwath continues to use a distinctive combination of text, texture, pattern, and image in her paintings. Familiar images of bunnies, guilt free zones, and the world reoccur in her latest paintings. Two of Carnwath's paintings, entitled Good Luck and Lucky, engage the viewer with color and texture and explore the concept of good fortune.

Squeak Carnwath, an Oakland resident, is currently a professor at the University of California at Berkeley after spending many years teaching at University of California at Davis. She earned her Masters degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Carnwath was a SECA (Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art) award winner, given by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, in 1980 and received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980 and 1985. Her work is included many private and public collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Oakland Museum.

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, October 23rd, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
