John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent photographs by Gregory Crewdson. This exhibition opens Wednesday, October 22nd, and will run through Saturday, November 22nd.
For Dream House, Gregory Crewdson continues to take elaborately staged photographs exploring the underside of American home life. He uses suburbia as the backdrop against which his own psychological dramas unfold. Theatrical lighting and special effects de-familiarize scenes that could take place anywhere in middle-class America. What differentiates this series of photographs from Twilight and other earlier series by Crewdson is the introduction of celebrities into his melodramatic and often uncomfortable world. Actors such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, and William H. Macy pose for photographs that are intended to invert their celebrity image and explore the themes of sexual desire, personal obsession, and social alienation.
Born in Brooklyn New York, Crewdson attended SUNY Purchase for his BA and Yale School of Art for his MFA. He has held several teaching positions throughout his career and has been teaching at Yale University since 1993. Crewdson's photographs are included in many major museums and galleries around the world, including the Art Institute in Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, and the San Francisco Museum of Art.
A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, October 23rd, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
