September 9 - October 9, 2004Statement
In his seventh solo exhibition at the John Berggruen Gallery, Michael Gregory unveils his latest investigations into the character of barns, silos, tents and trailers set against perpetually stormy and fickle skies. Gregory's most recent body of work reveals a departure from his characteristically limited pallet of grays, whites and blacks, as color is announced into his landscapes.
For a number of years, Gregory has been fascinated with the study of old barns, silos and other solitary structures. Although he paints from his imagination, his canvases possess a photographic quality due to the meticulous execution of the paint and the extreme attention to detail. Dominating and center stage, the structures are brooding, moody, and commanding.
Gregory's work is included in many private and public collections including the U.S. Trust Company of New York, Microsoft Corporation, General Mills Corporation, and Bank of America, as well as the Denver Art Museum and the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington. Currently, Gregory is living and working in the Bay Area.
