Paul Wonner

Forty Years of Paintings on Paper

January 8 - March 11, 2004

Statement

John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Paul Wonner's works on paper from the last forty years. Paul Wonner, one of the founding members of the Bay Area Figurative movement in the 1950's and 60's, worked along side Richard Diebenkorn, David Park and Elmer Bischoff, but by the mid-1960's, he began following his deep interest in still life paintings, culminating in his highly regarded series "Imaginary Dutch Still Lifes". This exhibition will include paintings on paper from his figurative and still life periods, as well as his recent "In a Park" landscapes. Wonner's works are infused with rich and vibrant color.

Paul Wonner's work is represented in public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C., and the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, also in Washington D.C.
