Biography

Sarah Blaustein is a visual artist currently living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Blaustein creates paintings from an exploration of moments in the past and present. Through self-reflection, she paints how she feels.

Blaustein’s Vessel works focus on painting her inner feelings. Blaustein starts with the reflection the human vessel is important, mysterious and powerful – it feels, releases, creates, births and holds – yet cannot be seen. Blaustein is interested in painting the sensations she can only feel. The vessel works are present tense works where she paints one sensation, one moment that she describes as a “bodily dance”. The works become a metaphysical world within themselves. Blaustein utilizes household tools to apply the medium, including sponges, brooms, buckets, housepainters brushes or rags.  Ink and acrylic is applied to canvas or paper. Time plays a key role in her process: Blaustein uses the time between applications to gather additional stimulus, sensations, visual perspective, and self-reflection.  Blaustein finds similarities between the mental process to prepare to create these pieces and a spiritual side: she practices, finds, enters and explores a deep meditative state to better hone her method of to better understanding her authentic self.
