Jenny Pockley
Biography
As a development from her earlier London cityscapes, Jenny Pockley now distances herself from the subject to encompass more of the atmosphere around it, floating higher above the city while stretching the viewer's gaze out to the horizon. This expansiveness allows her the freedom to explore a range of hue, manipulating the palette to achieve a dramatic vibrancy in which subtle monochromatic skies, again reminiscent of the rich color of Monet, envelop the landscape.
Such freedom reveals the artist's great ability to convey fluently her own emotional response to the landscape. Her sweeping brush marks and shimmering light applied over a gesso ground enables Pockley to create her own mysterious urban utopia, a place far removed from the crowded streets, the pumping exhaust fumes or the crushing commute on the underground.
Ironically, in the eight years that Pockley was based in London, including three years at the Royal Academy Schools, she never looked to the city as a subject for her painting. It was only after moving to the countryside that the artist achieved a more distant perspective in which she was able to celebrate the majesty of the metropolis.
