April: Travels to Japan with Crown Point Press. Makes woodblock print Cedar Hill with Japanese traditional Ukiyo-e printer, Tadashi Toda, in a hillside studio in Kyoto. Also visits Nara and Tokyo.

August-September: In Connecticut. Executes many works on paper, including Against the Rules and Ice.
1982 February: Executes large works on paper, Eos.
May: Receives Honorary Degree, Doctor of Fine Arts, Brandies University. Anthony Caro uses artist's New York studio to make paintings.

1959 March: First solo exhibition at Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York.
May: Makes collages, including Twine and Untitled (collage with Gum wrapper).

1958 April: Marries Robert Motherwell; moves to 94th Street.
May-October: Extended travels with Motherwell to Spain and France, including trips to Altamira and Lascaux. Paints on canvas and paper on board ship, in Madrid, and at Villa in St. Jean-de-Luz, France. Works on paper executed in June:
The Bullfight, Italia Prima Classe (collage), Madridscape, Madrid series, and Madrid series, and Madrid Wall;
July: Brown Top Shapes, Cabin No.118, Hendaye, St. Jean-de-Luz series;

Autumn: Moves studio to Third Avenue between 94th and 95th Streets. Teaches painting and drawing, part-time, School of Education, New York University (continues through 1961)
1957 Summer: Visits Bolton Landing, East Hampton, Long Island, Martha's Vineyard and Provincetown. Draws and paints on these trips, including works on paper series, Number 6(TIW-Terminal Iron works, Bolton Landing).
1956 Summer: Travels to Paris, Germany, Netherlands, and Austria. Watercolors executed on this trip including: Untitled(Hotel du Quai Voltaire), St. Caste Landscape, and The de l'Elephant.
